Ce livre retrace, sur deux modes, l' histoire du régime soviétique stalinien, de la fin des années 1920 à la mort de Staline en 1953. Cet ouvrage restitue les temps forts de cette période: Les années 1930, vers le socialisme et la modernité, mais aussi celles de la "Grande Terreur", des déportations et procès, puis l' épreuve de la "Gande Guerre Patriotique", et enfin la sortie de la guerre et le stalinisme conquérant.
En miroir de ce texte, des photos, provenat d'archives publiques ou de collections privées, collectées depuisplusieurs années par Mark Grosset dans tout e l' ex-Union soviétique. Images officielles d' un peuple à la conquête du bonheur socialiste, d' une jeunesse riche d' avenir, de la construction industrielle, agricole, architecturale d' un pays, mais aussi images violentes de la répression, des réalités quotidiennes et terribles.
Des grans mouvements photographiques des années 1930 à l' esthétique du réalisme socialiste triomphant, ces quelques 250 photos, pour la plupart inédites, sont des documents majeurs pour comprendre l histoire russe du 20 ème siècle.
